GREECE-The Thriller is going on- The "Next Day" report

“Biblical Disaster”.... "Images of war in time of peace" ... "bombarded land" ... are some of the characterizations given to the great tragedy that hit Greece after the wild fires in Eastern Attica!

Rescuers continue the desperate search for survivors in the town, for identifying charred bodies, and for finding missing people.... Horrific stories have emerged from the chaos as firefighters and rescuers continue to search for people. The TV channels and the Social Media are constantly transmitting information and messages regarding above research and its results while many people are looking for members of their families and for friends with calls and messages to all mass media! Emergency services have reported being inundated with calls from desperate relatives searching for missing loved ones.

The tragic report is as follows (up to now): about 2,000 homes have been destroyed, the death toll has risen to 81, but there are fears the final number will reach over 100, Hundreds more are injured, with at least ten in intensive care….

A Supreme Court prosecutor has ordered a probe into the cause of the fires amid fears they were started deliberately. The extreme heat and gale force winds in the area aided the fire in spreading rapidly out of control. The bodies of 26 adults and children were discovered embracing each other on a cliff top as they seemed to have tried to run toward the ocean. Nikos Economopoulos, head of Greece's Red Cross, said: "They had tried to find an escape route but unfortunately these people and their kids didn't make it in time. “Instinctively, seeing the end nearing, they embraced.” Some of those who fled on the roads were unable to outrun the blazes and died trapped in their cars. Some people who fled into the ocean to escape the heat drowned. The picturesque villages of Mati and Kokkino Limanaki changed to a place of ruins and a burned landscape.

It is very important and also very touching to speak about the big response of many citizens for help to the victims of the fire as: volunteers, individuals, businesses and organizations that continuously offer products (food, water, clothing and other equipment), shelter, money, and whatever everyone can give to help !
