The Only Greek Primary School in Prigipos (Büyükada)

Turkey » Büyükada

Prince Islands are the closest islands to Constantinople, the capital of two great empires. The last island in the series is the largest and most important, something that can already be seen from its name: Prigipos (Prince). The Turks call it Büyükada, meaning Big Island. It is indeed the largest of the Princes' Islands, with an area of 5.5 sq. Km and a permanent population of about 7000 people, of which about 100 Romans, who were once the majority here (5000 in the last Ottoman years, 800 Turks and 1200 of other nationalities). In Prigipos is located the Diocese of the Princes' Islands, as well as the only Greek primary school still operating on the islands, today with only 4 students.

This year, on Easter days, and specifically on Holy Saturday, April 23, 2022, the reporter Maria Zacharaki with the camera of OPEN TV visited the Greek school of Prigipos and talked with teachers and students about the preservation of Greek customs and the Greek Culture from generation to generation, about the teaching of the Greek language but also about the devotion to Orthodoxy and the customs of the Christian Orthodox Tradition. The school has a classroom, a dining room and a small library. Together with the above journalist, was also a group of Greeks (of the Hava Baba Club) who visited the Greek School, spoke with its few students and gave them chocolate Easter eggs while the children sang Greek Easter songs in front of the camera and wished everyone " HAPPY EASTER"…
